English /ɪ/ vs /i/Ship or sheep?

Well-studied nonnative vowel categories. Expand word frames so choosing a vowel category can generalize beyond three memorized pairs; test spectral and duration cues rather than teaching duration alone.

Practice these sounds
/ɪ/

The vowel in this first set

A near-close, unrounded vowel. Compare its quality with the other category, not just its duration.

As inship
/i/

A close, unrounded vowel

The tongue is high and toward the front. Listen to the vowel as one complete sound.

As insheep

WHAT TO LISTEN FOR

A small change.
A different word.

The consonants on either side of each vowel stay the same: sh–p in ship and sheep, f–l in fill and feel. That gives you a consistent frame for listening to the middle.

Listen for the target sound in each word.

A common trap

Do not use duration as the only clue. Different speakers and speaking rates change timing; the vowel quality matters too.

Practice these sounds

Keep the sound. Change the word.

Switch from ship/sheep to fill/feel or sit/seat. A new word frame checks whether you noticed the vowel category rather than one familiar recording.
